The lotus blossom grows from muddy dirty water into a beautiful pure white flower. Like a lotus blossom Jia grows up in squalor, fighting for her place in life and just scraping by, yet she has a beautiful heart and kind soul.
Luo Cheng has been attempting to pass the imperial exams, but he has merely been reciting poetry and not able to create it. Once he meets Jai she opens up something inside and his creativity flows. She is his muse.
Jai and Cheng together have instant chemistry that draws you along with them. As quickly as it happens their love has a ring of truth to it. And when the time comes for Jai to decide what she is willing to sacrifice for this love she does with out a second thought.
Lin has written a perfect novella. It is beautifully descriptive, bringing ancient China to life. You are introduced to the characters and the plot with out missing a beat. This simple sweet story will not only be enjoyable but will wet your appetite for the rest of Lin’s work.

This book was fine, but it was too short to really get to know the characters or see them get to know each other.
I thought that this book was rushed as it doesn’t show any relationship development and by the end of the book Cheng and Jia decide to get married, which to me made no sense as they didn’t really spend time together.
There were no side characters either.
I want to read the next book in the series to see if I’m going to like this series as this book was too short to show anything.

y biggest disappointment is that the story was a novella, rather than a full length novel. I thought the story deserved further development - but I always think that Ms. Lin’s books should be longer. I enjoy them that much.
The Silken Thief tells the story of a song girl and a scholar who fall in love. I love the way Ms. Lin recreates ancient worlds in china and uses the history to build a romance. The premise and story were intriguing, but the short length did not allow the character or relationship development that I would have liked to have seen.
Torn between 3 and 4 stars on my five star scale so I’ll round up.

This is a delicious little novella. Despite the limited space, I felt I came to know the characters well and I ached for both of them and their dilemmas. I could have spent a whole novel with these two and would have loved more time with them, but it really wasn't necessary in order to tell their story. I have to admire an author who can tell a story so compactly and beautifully.

A short, sweet romance set in Tang Dynasty China. Too short for real character development, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
