Wow! What an amazing read that was! I honestly loved it! A very quick read for me, the pages just flew by, and I couldn’t help but keep reading to find out what would happen next. The chapters were quite long, but not at all boring/dragging in any way. Literally completed the book in just two days, which is pretty decent as far as I’m concerned. The plot was really good, fast-paced, and the sub plots blended in well with the main one. The characters were very well-written, and I totally loved the Drothe-Degan bromance. The places and the cordons did their bit of standing out. The world building was impressive! Both the history and the lore were very well defined and very much added to the book altogether. This book, for me, will always remain special and close to my heart because I read this after quite a significantly long break from not only fantasy, but from reading in general, and it rekindled my love for books (especially for fantasy!). And since then, there has been no looking back! I highly recommend that you check this GEM of a book out!

Rating: – 9.6/10 (AMAZING!)

“A quite brilliant fantasy adventure through the eyes of a master thief; taking you into the underworld, and keeping you wanting for more with its characters and lore long after you’ve read the last page. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Highly recommend that you give it a go!”

I am going to do a 3 reasons review cos my thoughts on this book are divided. The first 200 pages are a 2, the last 200 pages a 3. But I will only grade it for those good 200 pages.

1.) Reasons you chose this book
Honestly, it was fantasy and I wanted to read it.

2.) Reasons you liked or disliked this book
I disliked the book cos the first 200 pages were boring. I thought about giving up as I really did not care about anything happening. But at the same time I did not want to give up cos I truly hate giving up. But it was still sort of ok.

I liked the book cos of the second half of the book. There was excitement, chases, people trying to kill him, Drothe trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Big revelations about the Empire and me wondering what was hidden in the past. It got me interested, it made me like this book.

3.) Reasons you are recommending this book
Now I am torn again. I liked it and I thought it was ok. Which side should I listen to? It was not as the first part was bad, it was just not as interesting to me as the rest was. But I would still recommend it cos of the second half.

As for the grade, that is all cos of the second half as I liked that part and there was nothing wrong with it at all.

What do I say? I desperately wanted this book to be over; was constantly reminded of other books I'd rather be reading; constantly rolling my eyes every time Drothe was being horny, but am seriously considering picking up the next book of this series?? Maybe?? Idk what to feel about this stupid book, ask me in six months

Like Locke Lamora without the insane amounts of charm and charisma, Among Thieves is still pretty fun. Swashbucklery thieviness abounds as Drothe makes his way through a dark, criminal underworld, trying to find out why everyone is screwing him over. Entertaining and a nice turn into the next book, it'll do until Lamora and crew come back this fall.

It is difficult to believe that Among Theives is the author's, Douglas Hulick, first novel. The writing maybe concise and simple yet the storytelling is really brilliant. It is refreshing to see a fantasy novel that does not really have any romance part being pour into the mix and it works - superbly - with this novel. Kudos to the author for creating such a fun, adventurous read.

heard about it from Scalzi's big idea blog, where the author talked about some inspiration for the tale coming from a book of slang/thieves' cant/flash. There is some of that, but not as much as I would have expected. still, entertaining.
