I picked this book up on a whim based on the cover and I feel really grateful I did. This was awesome. This is exactly my kind of fantasy book. Such great characters, wonderful adventures, creative magic. Normally I avoid books with any kind of SA content warning, but I had no issues here. The subject was handled as tastefully and respectfully as I think is possible and it did not feel like a cheap female character trauma at all. I wasn't sure how I felt about the potential romance brewing at first, since I had other ideas for how I wanted the book to go, but ultimately I can't blame them for falling in love with each other when I would have done the same in their position.

This was such a good YA standalone and I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to review it right after I read it last year! Thanks to the NOVL for sending me an ARC of this one in exchange for my honest thoughts. There was a lot of darkness blended with the light and hope in this one. Both Flora and Lazarus suffered greatly before meeting each other (I won't say more but the content warnings are relevant here) and it was so sweet seeing their relationship develop. Add in Atonais, and you have a classic unlikely trio who you'll be cheering for from start to finish.

The world-building wasn't very complex, although there are some cool mythical characters and great action scenes. Pentecost did a great job balancing demons and tragic backstories with magic and satisfying character growth. All in all, a worthwhile addition to your fantasy collection!
