Short story. Emma Donoghue doing soft sci-fi about procreation, read by Samira Wiley?! Yes, PLEASE. Man, I wish she’d turn this into a whole book, I loved the world building.

In the not so distant future, women have taken The Pledge: a promise to not reproduce in order to reduce the population and limit carbon emissions. Women wear a "Phri", wearable electronic birth control that sends a signal to their bodies not to produce certain hormones. On the surface, this is seen as women's ultimate liberation... but can it override the natural instinct to reproduce? Halfway to Free is a thought-provoking short story that will leave you wanting more. Great for fans of The Handmaid's Tale and The Water Cure.

A well-constructed story for a rather believable entry in this Amazon originals series.

Questions of how humanity will survive in the future and what being human will even mean.

Samira Wiley's narration is perfect.

Meh. This one just really didn't do it for me, maybe because the message felt confusing, and definitely because I couldn't understand Miriam's and Ned's reasoning.

Covid babies really messed up this theme. Maybe it’s the population boom of 2020 referenced.

This one is very middle of the road. I think the potential was there,  but the short story format didn't work in it's favor.
