A Steamy Coming Of Age Novel 19th Century Style

Our heroine tells her own story form the age of 19 to 25. She starts out as a sheltered music hall fan, working in the family oyster business. She ends up at a socialist convention in Golders Green.

The tale between those two points is a captivating 19 hour listen but it is definitely not one for small ears. As always Waters writing is amazing she really brings the 19th century to life using all five senses. She really made me route for Nancy even though at times I wanted to scream Have A Word With Yourself at her.

I consider this a classic of my life time and can't believe it has taken me this long to get to, but now I have and I loved it.

My god! I feel a fool for putting off this book for so long. Astounding—easily one of, if not my best books of the year. Not just a book, but literature… something I’ve been missing! Yes, my only complaint is that the beginning is slow; it’s true, the first 3 or 4 chapters I had a hard time getting through. But after that—wow, did I race through it this week! Yes, Nan is unlikable, but she’s real; isn’t that part of the point? You want your heroines to be perfect all the time? She is real, and quite unique, and all the characters around her are equally fleshed out. I also kind of wish that it was historically accurate; I didn’t realize it wasn’t until I read that bit bu the author included in someone else’s review. But that doesn’t really take away from it—the world feels so real, who cares if it isn’t?

Oyster girl, Nancy Astley's, life is changed as she experiences a sexual awakening starting with performer Kitty Butler, a woman who dresses like and puts on a show. Nancy goes from being an admirer with a crush, to Kitty's dresser, her lover, and eventually her performing partner, Unfortunately, societal expectations force them apart, and Nancy experiences her new found sexuality in dark heartbreaking ways.
This erotic and beautiful novel fascinated me with its heartbreaking story about this young woman's journey from Oyster girl to a Drag King. Nancy goes through so much just be her true self, even sacrificing her dignity in the process. I only hated one of the characters that came into Nancy's life, Diana. Her lifestyle wasn't my cup of tea, but I understood it and I get Nancy being susceptible to it. I hated how Diana treated her and there is one part during her time with Diana that made me uncomfortable to read. Water's writing is on par and makes for a relaxing story that includes enough description that you can easily picture in your head. She's uses the F word a few times and there are some scenes with a the characters using a dildo. It is a tragic but hopeful story by the end.
