The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is a darkly comic take on the mentor/student relationship, with twists and betrayal throughout. Miss Brodie is a teacher at Marcia Blaine School for Girls, and has selected a handful of girls into her “set,” a cluster of girls singled out for special attention. Miss Brodie doesn’t adhere to the curriculum, and each of the girls is infatuated with her as they go through school, loyal to her to a fault. Until one of them lets loose the information that forces Miss Brodie out of the school.
This was funny, tragic, and all too real. The dynamics between a manipulative teacher and her adoring students is fascinating; she supports them on the surface, but uses them to her own ends, as they ultimately end up using her. A sharp character study, not a lot happens, and yet so much does in Spark’s pointed lines.
