Really liked this one. It’s a short novella with a smart, clever main character (Shai) who figures things out and always stays two steps ahead. The magic system was cool and different, and I liked how she pushed beyond just “doing the job” to actually challenge what it means to change someone’s soul.

It’s self-contained, but I appreciated how much character development and tension it fit into such a small space.

I finally get why people rave about Brandon Sanderson. The story he's told here in so few pages is incredible - it's well paced, with complex characters and themes, yet still enjoyable and at times amusing. The world building and magic system is interesting without being too confusing.

All of that said, I felt a bit detached from Shai, but this could be due to the third-person narrative. I struggle to wholeheartedly love a story without wholeheartedly loving the characters, no matter how flawed they may be.

Overall, it's a great story that many readers will enjoy.
