As usual, I loved the book just like every other Brandon Sanderson's books. It was engaging, and I felt connected to the characters though it was shorter than most other books. Following Shai along her quest as she finds a way to her freedom is fun. The interactions between Shai and Gaotona was one of the best things about the book. The way they both try to understand each other through their interactions and try and learn what's going on with each other which leads to impacting each other is well written.

Beautiful concept and wonderful execution! I haven't seen any other fantasy book do something like this.

Yep, really good - reading this shortly after Elantris gives you a great view of Sanderson's progression as a writer. There is really no time to spare, no wiffling at all, it's very tight (too tight, according to some reviewers, but I liked it) and gets straight to the point whilst still leaving you plenty of time to consider what it really means to re-make a person from the memories of others. Whilst it's set in a middle ages world, I think it has a lot to say about the potential for dealing with memory loss, cryo-suspension and so on.

This is apparently set in the same world as Elantris but I really didn't pick that up at all, other than the magic systems having some similarity since they're both based on drawing symbols.
