Mini-review since it's a novella: It's like the Emperor's New Clothes fable, but told through a pseudo-Asian fantastical magical lens, with captor/captive tension and a Scheherazade-esque plucky female conwoman working for her life. Wonderfully unique world-building and system of magic that I was endlessly fascinated with. Great layered twists, and the characters are fantastic.
