This was a combination of reading the book while listening to the audio. I hadn't realized this was nonfiction at first. It was a Baldwin book that became available at my library, so I checked it out and started. Honestly, the first thing that stood out to me was that this must have been written before his views on Israel evolved. It wasn't pro-Israel at all, but it was very indifferent about the idea of Israel and Israelis. It's my understanding that he was eventually anti-zionist. As many have likely pointed out, Baldwin's writings on race in America are as true today as they were when he wrote them. There was a line in the letter to his nephew in the beginning that stood out to me as a stark contrast to America today: "...and we can make America what America must become." This is certainly a book that I will add to my book shelf.
