Need to re-read as physical book because I often got distracted listening to this as an audiobook.

Started off the month with a reread to inspire me with the work I do for a new school year.

an essay collection that's both a window into the time it was written and a classic that's still timeless. you can feel the momentum of the civil rights era in his writing combined with so much insightful writing that fully feels America's despair, but still rings hopeful.

Baldwin's writing is even more beautiful than his oratory, and that's saying something.

Undeniably beautiful, elegant prose. I picked up this book because Baldwin is widely quoted by more contemporary authors and referenced as the voice of the racial justice movement of his generation. However, the message feels a bit distant to me personally and unlike contemporary Black writers, his message does not resonate with me as much.
