wow. olivia gatwood so skillfully connects her early experiences, our modern-day obsession with true crime, and the fears of women across the board. throughout her collection of poems, she gives gentle but firm notice to the role race plays in real women’s outcomes. and with grace, she dances around how simultaneously rational and irrational women’s fears can often be. I felt both held and challenged by the end of the book.

My favorite poems were the ones involving Jordan and the summer. I also liked the poems about Aileen. I don't quite like true crime and stories about dead girls, but this wasn't so bad.

Also, poems that are written as though they are a stream of consciousness seem to be trying too hard to achieve that effortlessness.

I can see why people love this collection, but I honestly got about a quarter of the way through and hate-read it until the end. The only poem I genuinely enjoyed was “Ode to My Bitch Face,” which is what brought it up that extra .5.
