Surprising in many ways:
  • The prose was funnier than I thought it would be.
  • Some parts were actually more graphic  than I had expected it to be.
like the descriptions of pirates killing people
  • Definitely contains the same racist tropes I first learned about in the Disney film and actually contains racist slurs, which I was not expecting.
  •  I also didn’t expect to dislike Peter so much.

Not what Disney led us to expect. It read at times as if the author watched the play and summarized it for the reader. The author also broke the 4th wall in ways that may have been amusing to audiences in the past, but read a bit awkwardly to me. Most of the characters were pretty flat, especially Wendy, whose primary character traits are wanting to be a mother and keep things tidy.  It also just didn’t age well, and many phrases and characterizations of the inhabitants of Neverland are now very cringe-worthy to say the least. The end was sweet and earned the whole story a half star more. Wouldn’t recommend and put me in a bit of a reading slump, which is impressive for a book of less than 200 pages.

This book knows very well that it is a book, and a rather good one at that.

There's a reason this has been such a popular book over the years, though it's a little hard to put my finger on it. I've read it before, but only on my most recent reading did I realize how funny it is. This book made me laugh and cry in public. Though some of its features are long out of date, the story itself is timeless.

I think I enjoy concepts of Peter Pan, Neverland, lost boys, the plot beats of this story, etc. as themes in interpolations and retellings more than the actual reading experience of the source.

Considering what the movie contains, I shouldn't have been so shocked by the racism in the book but here we are. So much for a beloved childhood classic.

OBVIOUSLY PROBLEMATIC REPRESENTATION OF NATIVE CHARACTERS, slurs included, stereotypes used. Period-typical language and stereotypes.
