My first book by L'Amour. I expect I'll read a few more in the future - this was pretty good. Full of suspense and intrigue.

This is my first Louis L'Amour read - and not his typical story. This takes place in Russia and documents an American prisoner's escape. The American happens to be Native American, so his trek through Siberia includes many tactics used by his ancestors. There are various Russians chasing him, and we learn a little bit about them, too. There's a little too much repetitious writing for me - and too many Russian characters whose names begin with Z, or have a Z in them, which makes keeping track of the characters a little difficult sometimes.

4.5 stars. Fun and gripping throughout, with plain and efficient writing. Good details about wilderness survival, the tracking efforts by the adversaries, and the different peoples encountered by the protagonist. A satisfying ending. It's prety wild this hasn't been made into a movie yet.

I've never been a big fan of Louis L'Amour but this is an excellent read!

A great non-Western novel from L'Amour.

LOVED this! a kid in school who i hardly ever talked to (wish i could remember who) gave this to me and said "hey = you read a lot you'll probably like this." well- he started a small obsession. i made a vow to read every louis l'amour book EVER written. i got pretty far (as evidence by the louis l'amour shelf) but i started with the best one so the rest were slightly disappointing. after awhile i realized all of them were fundamentally the same story just with different names and places. still--- loved this read and found comfort in many of his other books!
