liked the writing style the multiple perspectives and the design of the book. tied different characters storylines together nicely while talking about important issues esp the commentary abt CIs
this book I think would serve as a good intro on deaf culture history and deaf issues for someone who knows very little …however did not rlly scratch the itch of what I personally wanted from this book as someone who was familiar with all the stuff being introduced and taught thru the narrative and the little info sections. nothing wrong with that just not what I personally was looking for
On a narrative standpoint I felt a lot of the side characters weren’t developed enough such as Gabriella and especially and particularly Kayla. we are told her and Charlie become friends but we don’t see why or how when they seem to only argue. The section where Austin is racist to her was so damn painful because Charlie and Austin as white people are so consumed with white guilt and it’s. really painful. it felt like it was just put in there to teach the readers and ofc racism in the deaf community and regarding BASL is a deeply important topic but it felt extremely half baked. Charlie and Austin spend a couple chapters self flagellating over their own whiteness absolving them of any idea they might not be perfectly enjoyable characters and then kayla gets one POV chapter and is basically never brought up again. I wish kayla was one of the main characters or either Charlie or Austin were black because Kayla’s experiences brought an important and unique perspective to the story lacked by every other character who sees river valley as this utopia which… isn’t the reality for a lot of students. I was also disappointed with how it originally set up Eliot as someone who would be very important but he was barely in the book. I think he would have been a v interesting main character.
The pacing was frustrating (the prologue events happen in the last 30 pages of the book which was. disappointing), I felt like a lot of plot lines were kind of abandoned, and I personally wasn’t super invested in some stuff happening (like feb & mels marital problems)
also was irked about the anarchists and especially the plot at the end. organization of a big protest especially one causing property damage can’t really be planned overnight like they do in the book and it was kind of crazy to see that compared to DPN … it was also kind of (unintentionally) positioned like the rest of the students were just incapable of protest and coming up with that kind of thing? like the way Charlie talked about coming up with this plan was so. idk. I wish instead of slash and shit we could have seen protest organization happening within the deaf community in the area or in the school
sorry for the essay. forgive me

A beautiful coming-of-age story, told mostly by 3 main characters. The perspectives were so contrasting but they all came together for a greater cause. I learned so much about the deaf community from this book. I borrowed it from the library, but this is one that I'll need to add to my IRL shelf so I can reference the ASL/BSL charts. The author is deaf & I hope to read more written by Sara in the near future!
