Echt een eye opener! Had van veel dingen waar dove mensen (tieners) mee te maken krijgen op dagelijkse basis geen idee. En leuk om ook iets meer inzicht te krijgen in de wereld van gebarentaal.

I loved the premise and the inclusion of education around ASL, deaf culture, and deaf history and found that inclusion well integrated and connected to the story’s mission of increasing awareness of the deaf community. I found all the characters likable and their differences handled with care and the diversity within the community represented with respect. I struggled with the pacing of the story and the build-up that I felt was unresolved. The pacing seemed to ramp up too late and the finality of the story felt unfinished. My book of month copy did not include the author’s note, which gives more justification for the ending, so without that, I feel like there’s author input missing! As my copy stands, I enjoyed it but felt underwhelmed.

4.5 stars. I REALLY wanted to give this a full 5, but the ending kind of fell flat??? I wanted to see loose ends tied up, and what happened after things settled down.

Besides the ending, I learned SO much from this fictional book! I grew up with two girls who were deaf in elementary school, and we got to learn about ASL which was a unique experience for me. But learning about multiple sign languages, historical events in the deaf community, and having pictures of actual signs to learn was so cool. The characters were well rounded, sharing different experiences and personalities, and the plot was easy to follow but not too simple. I will definitely buy my own copy so I can read again!!
