A beautiful, compassionate book, full of love, life and grief. Jandy Nelson is a great recommendation for those who like the clear prose and the truth of the characters in John Green.
It's difficult to read this book without feeling the emotional roller coaster of our main character, Lennie, who has lost her sister a couple of months before the opening pages of the novel, and is just beginning to emerge from the miasma of grief, to find she has been jolted into an awakening, reactionary need for intimacy, which sends her into all sorts of trouble with her deceased sister's equally lost boyfriend, and a new boy at school who seems her perfect match.
Lennie's betrayals of the two boys is gut twisting and believable, as the rawness of emotion Jandy draws is absolutely devastating, and it's heightened by the joyous and unique natures of all the characters in the book.
The book is enriched by Lennie's gorgeous poetry and the wordless beauty of music, and is an absolute treat to read.

A star for Nelson’s glittering language (think sunlit frost).
Another star for characters I missed when the book was through.
One for first love complicated.
And another for authentic grief.
The final star for a protagonist transforming toward wholeness.

A really stirring portrait of grief. Lennie's voice was honest and heartfelt, even when she was confused, and I think the book is able to take on some of the most wrenching and inexplicable expressions of loss (including sex) without the narrative turning into a sad-fest. There are moments of humor and remembered joy that make the grief more real, especially Lennie's survivor's guilt. The audiobook was well done.
Another beautiful, poignant novel from Jandy Nelson. Lennie's vibrant, extroverted, beloved older sister dies suddenly, and everyone in her orbit is left devastated. During Lennie's bereavement leave from school, a new boy comes to town...
Some of it may be a bit predictable (or a little too precious), but the characters are worth the investment.

This book felt for me as a typical book for teenagers. It dealt with grief, discovery of love and sexuality in a wonderful way. The main character did some stupid things, but they were typically teenage stupid things, so it was also really easy to forgive her. I loved following Lenny on her confusing trip through grief and love and loved where she ended up, what she discovered about herself and the people around her on the way.
Also, it was lovely to incorporate all the poems throughout the book, also in the way they were presented and how it was explained later why we knew where it was found etc.

I loved this heartbreaking but beautifully written story. I loved ALL the characters. Read it!
