Easily one of my favorites of the year. I loved its simplicity, but yet it held so much weight. It wasn't fast paced but it never once dragged, and I found myself devouring every chapter with an intense greed. Lalami executes the multiple POVs flawlessly, keeping the chapters short and enticing all while creating extremely compelling characters. I was obsessed from start to finish.

I’m very disappointed by the romance in this book and how it ended. The premise was interesting and I was getting into it, putting up with the romance because I knew it wouldn’t last. Ha.
At the end, it’s just another story of a woman giving up on her dreams to come be with a man who she is actually afraid of and who goes against all of her ideals. Giving up on never getting married and having a kid.

Read this for a book club and, although it's a heavy read I really enjoyed it. It's told my a number of characters, each their own unreliable narrator telling their own truths – the story was compelling and the characters drew me in.
