This is a tough one to review for me. It was a fast paced, quick read and I enjoyed it and always love Abby Jimenez’s writing.
However, there were some problematic character actions that bugged me.

I did not like the way that Kristen treated Josh at times. It just felt disrespectful and while I understand that it stemmed from a lack of self worth, it felt immature that she didn’t recognize that she was hurting him more and jerking him around.

Second, it really bothered me how quickly they got married. While they discussed medical reasons, they both also acknowledged Kristen’s tendency to leave Josh. It felt like really they got married to stop Kristen from running away, which is a serious issue that should be discussed together and in individual/couples counseling rather than “solving” it by getting married. It just felt like pushing off problems instead of addressing them. Like maybe after what happened it wasn’t smart to be making that drastic a decision. Like be together, sure, but don’t get married yet; decide to go to therapy and update your medical/emergency contacts and begin planning a life together but let’s take a pause on the enormous decisions until everyone is on more even and less grieving ground.

Also, I saw the pregnancy coming from conception but it did feel convenient and while I sincerely appreciated the discussion of infertility, it still felt like Kristen was granted a bit of a miracle that some women with her condition (and others) do not receive. I know many also are able to carry pregnancies but it did feel rather convenient especially so close to her intended surgery.

I didn’t love the beginning of the book (Josh’s descriptions of Kristen were so annoying!), but the latter half of the book bumped this up to 3.75/5 for me!
