My first time reading a book by someone from my country of Morocco. It was so good I finished it in one day. I liked the fact each character had their own story and those stories really drew me in.

anything lalami writes is amazing honestly. i really liked this series of short stories and the exploration of the push and pull factors that lead to migration as well as her descriptions of morocco. i didn't mind the lack of interconnectedness in the stories and i actually appreciated that the characters meet at one point in time and then not again. i think i just wished some of the characters had just a bit more depth to them. overall, a great read!

Kept waiting for the stories to become more intersected, but they never did. Feel like a lot more could have been done to make this feel more like a novel versus a short story collection - the first ties the two halves together, but it’s a tenuous thread.

The writing, of course, is excellent, and it’s a really thought-provoking read. Just feels like we’re being asked to invest in characters that disappear.
