Another great installment to the DCI Jonah Sheens series. Very twisty. I love the author's ability to weave such a perfectly laid out mystery!

To be perfectly honest, I requested this book by mistake, having not realized that it was part of a detective series. I considered declining the review instead, bc I hate starting a series in the middle. I figured I could probably be ok, given that each case is it’s own story.
Well, I am glad I decided to give it a shot. I’m surprised the series hasn’t been on my radar before. I guess there’s a lot more UK detective series out there (why are they always so much better than American ones?). I enjoyed the puzzle of main story, it was interesting and complex, and kept me hooked. But I also really enjoyed the dynamic of the team. I do feel like I have missed some stuff there but not enough that I felt lost. Their personal lives weren’t central to the story. However, they do make me want to go back and read the three stories that preceded it. I hope they are just as intricately plotted.
I will say that I usually don’t like not having a central narrator. Jonah is supposed to be the main character but it gives third person perspective to the others. Usually that bugs me but the story gives enough of itself to each of them that it didn’t take anything away.
I’m so happy this series is on my radar now, even by mistake. Looking forward to catching up to this one and keeping an eye out for future stories.

Little Sister by Gytha Lodge is an excellent example of the British police procedural model. This is the fourth instalment of the Detective Chief Inspector Jonah Sheens series but it reads well as a stand-alone, with the author updating the reader of any pertinent details from the previous novels. Two young girls are at the center of this mystery. One sister, Keely, shows up at DCI Sheens’ pub, with a jumbled tale, so intriguing that he can’t help but give her the benefit of the doubt. It appears that her younger sister, Nina, is missing. Both girls had been in care for several years, following the death of their mother. The mystery starts there and will lead the DCI and his detectives on a path of confusion and danger, while time is running out. Nothing is as it seems. The girls had gone from foster home to foster home, the last being worse than the previous. The DCI’s team are totally dedicated to getting to the bottom of Nina’s disappearance and that journey makes for a fascinating read. The characters are colourful and well-drawn. The plot captivates as the reader attempts to solve this mystery. Little Sister is well worth the read. This is my first Gytha Lodge book but I look forward to reading the others. Highly recommended. Thank you to Random House Publishing Group, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoying this series. Has this real suspenseful piece to it.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free ebook ARC edition of this book.
Wow, was this good! I was first introduced to the series with "She Lies in Wait" as an eARC and was so amazed at the author's story telling ability, I just couldn't wait for the next book. That feeling hasn't faded a bit after each book!
This is a dark psychological thriller with the question - Would you kill your sister? The story starts from page one with a bloodied young girl walking out of the woods and encountering DCI Jonah Sheens . The DCI's team both know they must move fast and press for information in order to locate the young girl, Nina, but also that they must wait for their witness - suspect? - Keeley to tell her tale. And what a tale it is! Tragedy, abuse, bullying, fear, confusion - it's all there!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good police-based thriller/suspense novel. Once I got into the book, it was so hard to put it down and deal with day to day things because I just wanted to know what happens next. Highly recommend, and I look forward to the release of the audio version so I can experience it all over again!

Just when you think you’re starting to figure things out, you are hit with another twist! Very gripping.
I loved it so much I finished it within in a day it really had me at the end of my seat it had amazing plottwist and unexpected things
dark
mysterious
sad
medium-paced
it took me longer to get into this than i expected, but it was an incredible book in the end!! the characters are once again amazing, you really start to feel for all of them, and the conclusion was incredibly satisfying. it's also really refreshing to read a book that deals with abuse and everything surrounding it in such a positive way if that makes sense? i genuinely loved it
I read my first Gytha Lodge book last year as part of a blog tour, not quite realising that ‘Lie Beside Me’ was actually book 3 in the DCI Jonah Sheens series. Despite jumping in with book 3, I really enjoyed the book, it had so many twists and turns that you didn’t know who to trust and I found myself struggling to put the book down.
Since this turned up on my doorstep I’ve been eager to pick it up and start reading and it did not disappoint. Again this is heavy with the twists, and you find yourself not quite knowing what to believe - is Keeley telling the truth? What really went on behind those closed doors? Where is Nina? I mean I was plagued with questions just like the cops and when they started spotting the little clues I found myself even more focused and trying to spot them myself!
I think I managed to spot 1 before they revealed it so clearly I wouldn’t make that much of a good investigator
