Kind of gave me Before Sunset vibes. Very slow to start, but glad I stuck with it. That said, it felt like something was missing and I’m not sure what. I’ll read the second one eventually but I’m not in a hurry.

I buddy read this book with Ali and we will be reading the 2nd book in June. It seems that I have an unpopular opinion on this book. I didn't hate it by no means it was just another ok book. I loved the FMC. She's a strong female lead who knows what she wants and doesn't take crap from anyone. She starts this book off being a virgin and I loved how this was handled. Most of the time being a virgin is made out to be a bad thing but not in this book and she doesn't let anyone not even her friends pressure her into something she knows she's not ready for. Maxim I think is supposed to be the male equivalent of Lennix. I liked there romance in the beginning but when that came to an end abruptly they barely spent anytime together and the book became too focused on the politics for my liking. The ending was a bit predictable to be but I'm looking forward to picking up the next book.

Wow I was blown away from this book and devoured it in two days. I am kind of obsessed with Lennix and Maxim. The way they met and their paths kept crossing - the steam - the second chance romance vibes. This story was very fast paced and completely captivating learning about both Lennix and Maxim' history and passions. I love a romance with two alpha characters. Also, it was deeply emotional at many different parts. Lennix is Yavapai-Apache and she (along with the author of course) does an amazing job describing the history of her tribe and the struggle of American Indians in history and the present day in America. I love how hard she fights for the underprivileged groups in America and reading about some of her traditions. The cliff hanger has me SO ANGRY and I am pick up the next one immediately.

The Kingmaker is definitely one of my top 5 reads of 2024! I love Kennedy Ryan, but she outdid herself with this one. This book had everything: Plot, Character Development, Surprise Twists, Romance, Spice, plus very well researched storylines about Native American ceremonies, missing indigenous women, Climate Science, and our countries political climate. I’d rate it higher than a 5 if I could! Finished in one day!

“If the price is ultimately heartbreak, my eyes are wide open.”

“And you know what? They label buildings historically protected so businesses can't destroy the with new offices or whatever they determine means progress. That’s because someone says the value of that thing is worth more then the revenue destroying it would create. Yet every time something of ours has been declared sacred, it's desecrated as soon as protecting it inconveniences someone in power."

"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”

kennedy ryan, i love you, but what was this??? i was told this was “scandal in a book”… you guys LIED. if anything, it’s a bootleg version. i told myself i would dnf this book at 5%, but my inability to stop reading a book because im too curious about if it will get better took over. it was hard to root for maxim & lennix’s relationship bc let’s be real, what did they have other than sex?? there was no substance! i also find stories where someone falls in love with their oppressor (or rather the son or their oppressor in this case) superrrr weird. esp considering lennix is native & a majority of her conversations with maxim end up in sex; it felt like colonization of her body more than love. & i think age gap stories are just strange to me considering she was 17 when they met , they then made a whole deal about her “finally being 21”, & we didn’t find out maxim was 7 years older until the time jump to him being 38. also the activism in this book just felt so white liberal coded to me i just wanted it to stop. also maxim being an avid climate change activist but owning a jet & being so pro capitalist was very stupid in my opinion, but i guess that’s how it is irl too… im very annoyed that the book then took such a random turn in the last chapter & ended on a cliffhanger because now i feel inclined to read the next one even though i know it will be horrible. kennedy ryan, i don’t like feeling this way about your writing bestie! thank God you have written much better things. i will take this as her old wattpad writing that i’ve uncovered.
