If there’s any middle-grade book series that needs to be adapted as a 2D animated film (think Ghibi meets How to Train Your Dragon), it’s this one and maybe it’s subsequent sequels.

I've loved this book since I was a kid, and it still holds up! Full of action, adventure, twists and turns. It follows a well-established plot, but is driven forward by the characters just as strongly as the events themselves. A good read for younger and older readers.

This was a fun story that came highly recommended by a friend of mine and it was fun to binge the audiobook!

Gregor was precious and I loved his boldness and heart throughout the story. It's very much a middle grade fantasy meant to tug on the heartstrings while being exciting at the same time. With Gregor being 11, I was surprised by the amount of violence that happened in the book. There were a lot of morbid deaths that I would consider fairly descriptive for this age group, but I suppose that's to be expected from the author of The Hunger Games.

Overall, I think it was fun but I would caution young readers who might be sensitive to de@th to avoid the book. If you're a parent/guardian, feel free to message me if you'd like more details on the type of violence included. However, there was no cursing, nor romance of any kind in this book.

This series is an underrated gem. The whole thing is so well plotted and woven together with excellent worldbuilding. It's also clear that this writer has experience with poverty, unlike a lot of other writers who attempt similar subjects. I cannot recommend this series enough.

As always, loved this book. This is probably the thirteenth or fourteenth time I've re-read this series, and there's a reason for it. It's a quick read, but Suzanne Collins does a fantastic job keeping it engaging the entire time without sacrificing any plot. No matter how many times I read it, I always seem to pick up new things and subtle foreshadowing that I hadn't before. Easy book for middle grade, fun read for older kids, and still recommended for young adults.
