The Intangible by C.J. Washington
โ€œIf you were bleeding out right not, it might be an opportune moment to talk about the purpose of life and the meaning of death, but you wouldnโ€™t want me to do that. You would want me to take life-preserving action. Even if it failed. You would want action.โ€

Synopsis: The story follows two couples: Amanda and Derrick, who want a baby more than anything but have hit their share of roadblocks, during which time Amanda turns to neuroscientist Patrick, whoโ€™s wife has thrown herself into her work as a mathematician with secrets of her own, to help. The lives of these couples crash and while relationships are forged, secrets are exposed, and everything will change.

So I just randomly picked this book out of my entire huge kindle library and didnโ€™t even read the synopsis before jumping in head first. For this one, I am going to make a pros and cons list.
PROS:
  • Written by a black male author, there are POC characters in this story. But the best part is, the fact that their black isnโ€™t a pivotal plot point at all, for the most part. In fact, itโ€™s almost barely mentioned. I love seeing representation for POC characters that their blackness doesnโ€™t drive the plot. Refreshing.
  • I actually really enjoyed the parts where these incredible minds explained their work in a scientific way. It really helped establish the characters.

CONS:
  • A LOT of characters that can get very easily confused. Both Amanda and Marissa have a sister, Patrick has a brother, Amandas mother plays a big role also, and there are even more characters from the past that come into play. Made it hard to follow them all individually at times.
  • While I enjoyed the scientific/mathematical discussions during the story, others might find them long winded and boring. I think cutting back on some of them could have shortened the book a bit and made it more accessible.

All in all, this story was more of a drama in my eyes than a thriller. There were a few minor twists and turns, but overall I would consider this almost a romance before a thriller. However, I really enjoyed my time reading it and it was an ambitious debut that I think payed off. I give The Intangible a 7.5/10 bubble baths!๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ›

This hit too close to home, and I hated it.  Don't get me wrong, it was well written, and the jumps in time and perspective kept the book moving forward, the plot just wasn't for me.

I hated amanda, patrick, derrick and rob. Basically, I hated all the cheaters.

Tbh, the story and writing of the first half were amazing and I was intrigued. But as the story developed so did the "cheating" plot which is yuck. The ending made me nauseous.
