Wish You Were Gone by Kieran Scott

Emma Walsh's marriage to James Walsh seems to be perfect. A wealthy husband, huge home, best private school for the kids, fancy parties, she wants for nothing, it would seem. But the reality is that James is a monster and Emma and their kids wonder when he is going to finally kill them. They live their lives walking on egg shells, knowing that nothing they do will please James. So when James drives home drunk, smashes into the back of the garage, and ends up dead, that's a good thing, isn't it?

Emma, daughter Kelsey, and son Hunter, struggle with their grief, anger, shock, and secrets. The entire family needs counseling but no one wants to open up and talk about what James did to them or how they are feeling now. Isn't it enough that he is dead? Thankfully Emma has her two best friends (who can stand each other) to support her through this difficult time. Actually, they are also going to help Emma find out what James might have been doing to end up dead. What are best friends for otherwise?

The chapters are short, with multiple narrators, and the story flowed so well that I stayed up way too late doing the "just one more chapter" thing. Everyone has secrets, I found some of the characters more likeable than others, but overall, I could feel for each person except for the vile James. There was no way I could guess what really happened with James although the way things really played out didn't surprise me. I enjoyed the journey to the end of the story, a slow burn of grief, relief, suspicion, and secrets.

This book is told in so many POVs I could not even break it down for you. Emma’s husband James crashes thru the garage door while she and her son are sleeping, her daughter Kelsey was sleeping over at a friend's Willows house, her mother is Lizzie, which is one of Emma’s BFF, her other is Gray. Gray is Darnell's wife, who is also James' partner at their PR FIRM that specializes in sports entertainers. Gray and Lizzie do not get along, it’s very apparent throughout the book. Why you’ll have to read it to find out.

Emma begins her search on finding just who her husband is. On the outside, he’s a great guy. With loads of friends. At home, he is a dismissive, mean, and angry drunk. Emma couldn’t stand him. But was James death an accident ?? The more you read, the more enemies James seems to have. And a lot of people including his own family wanted him gone. You’ll have to read how this turns out. It’s a great page-turner with lots of twists throughout the book.

This was okay! It was well written and I was intrigued throughout because everyone is so suspicious The ending wasn’t bad in the way many thrillers/suspense novels are, where the ending twist is so out of left field that it makes no sense with any other information we’d learned so far. It made perfect sense! But it was a bit of a bummer that it wasn’t something more shocking. It all got tied up neatly without any thrills. The best way I can describe this? Tepid!

Trigger warning: alcoholism, emotional abuse.

This book is a multiple POV story centered around the extremely wealthy Walsh family following the death of James, the alcoholic patriarch. It's basically a web of people connected to James, and the story alternates between several POVs (both adult and teen) as well as past and present while telling the story of the day before James' death and the days following.

I read this in basically one sitting - as soon as I started reading, I wanted to know what was actually going on, because there's A LOT going on. It's a little triggering if you've experienced alcoholism firsthand, particularly from a parent, so a content warning there even though it's mentioned in the blurb.

Will definitely recommend for the ease of the read and I liked the conclusion!

This one started out strong and seemed really promising but it fell flat for me. Generally I really love short chapters, but these ones were almost too short, with too many characters to keep track of. I also was not a fan of how the storyline jumped all over. It was sometimes hard to keep track of the timeline for some reason. And none of the characters were very likeable so I was like "who am I supposed be caring for here?". We all know everyone is better off with James Walsh dead, so I need to care about the other characters to be invested, and I just couldn't get there. And the bickering "mean girl" vibes from the main characters two best friends was just weird. Are adult women really like that? Yikes. Anyway! I was surprised by the ending so there was that at least!

Thanks to netgalley for this arc. All opinions my own.

First read of the year was pretty good. Lots going on in this one. Twisty, suspenseful psychological thriller/mystery. Many points of view from all of the different characters. The writing was so-so but the story was interesting. There were a few things that I didn’t love - the constant, juvenile bickering between the main character’s best friends got old quick, and her overall cluelessness throughout the story was annoying. Overall, a good thriller. 3.5 stars rounded up.
