Wow. What a big rollicking read. I hate to say something so cliched: but this work really blasts in as the voice of a generation. I'm glad I finally got to it.
Great read. Very entertaining and poignant. The end was weird, though. I wasn't able to understand the connection with the rest of the tone of the book.
It could be that I am just not in the right place in life to enjoy this book. I don't know.
The author captured the characters extremely well. Wow! My heart aches for these boys.
A strange, stream-of-consciousness read. I didn't love it all, but couldn't put it down - I even laughed out loud at times.
AHWSG is written in stream of consciousness, which is often done wrong but rarely done right--I think Eggers handled himself well here. The story itself was touching and evoked riotous laughter throughout the reading. I found the narrator easy to identify with, and I loved his relationship with his little brother. Eggers took the script from a made-for-TV movie and made it into something stunning. I think the book really lives up to the name.
Although I could really have lived without so many Frisbee sessions. It's like, I get it... you're really awesome at Frisbee. I'm not a Frisbee enthusiast, and these parts only served to remind me of Eggers' major fanbase and how annoyingly "hip" they all are. Once I got past that, however, I found what is really a very simple story that Eggers tells with a raw beauty that totally captivated me.

Alternative title: A Self-Indulgent Work of Festering Genius
The worst book I couldn't put down; the best book I've ever wanted to set on fire.

- it's self-conscious & pretentious, but pretentious in the way that smart kids are when they're trying to be cool but are still riled up by grammatical slips etc. — betrayed by their own proclivities
