Though I’m not this books target audience, it still had me in tears by the end. It has a good message about emotional regulation and the struggles of dealing with grief. An emotional read for sure.

ooooooooo this was written for me i think like i think it does such an amazing job at capturing the complicated feelings and guilt that come with a sick parent when you are too young to understand. sent several passages to my therapist
Like the monster who comes calling for Conor, this story is a poetic force of nature that will stay with me for a while. Patrick Ness weaves together two tales, one seemingly fantastical and unrelated, moving along parallel planes to the "real" story, only to poignantly intersect the two to get you thinking about the complexity of human nature and what it's like to deal with the grief and pain of losing a loved one. The vividness and truth blew me away.

My throat is constricted and sore after reading this; I'm actually seizing up with the effort I'm making not to cry.
This book is cut from the same thematic cloth as [b:The Sad Book|300961|Michael Rosen's Sad Book|Michael Rosen|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320467878s/300961.jpg|105086], though this one hit me harder. This is most likely because you spend a lot longer with this one and its characters as expected for a middle grade novel, whereas [b:The Sad Book|300961|Michael Rosen's Sad Book|Michael Rosen|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320467878s/300961.jpg|105086] is truly for all ages in its simplicity.
It's well-written, completely engrossing (I read it within a few hours), and overall a great (if extremely sad) story. It felt extremely honest in its execution, and it's inspired me to look into [a:Siobhan Dowd|80760|Siobhan Dowd|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1247239788p2/80760.jpg]'s stories as well as pull out the other [a:Patrick Ness|370361|Patrick Ness|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1244216486p2/370361.jpg] stories I have on my to-read list.

The illustrations are simply incredible. The whole book is truly an experience.

I have never finished a book in one sitting until this. Probably helps it’s YA and short (still 237 pages though!) but it’s gripping, beautifully written and very enticing. A wonderful read from start to finish.
