🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scotland lived, she could never die, the land would outlast them all, their wars and their Argentines, and the winds come sailing over the Grampians still with their storms and rain and dew that ripened the crops-long and long after all their little vexings in the evening light was dead and gone.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

How do you feel about dated language in classic novels?  Should they be edited out? Not reprinted? Or should they continue to be available to ensure people know the history of these words and that authors should be held accountable (even if long dead)?

This is the discussion that Sunset Song opened for me (with the readalong with @booksbethanyreads and the gang and with my pal @inkanddynamite 💛). What an interesting discussion! 👏🏻

I’ll start with the beauty of this book as there is plenty to rave about!  Sunset Song is written in classic language but also some East Coast Scots included.  I think this is the most accessible classic I have read for that reason alone.. I could understand it!  The story itself is tremendous! Written by a man from the POV of a young woman growing up in the early 1900s in a man’s world, fighting with herself over her need for more, a need for a higher purpose, the need to learn, the need to be a more modern woman and her love of the land, of her village, of the people who surround her there, the need of family and traditional values.

Lewis Grassic Gibbon writes from the POV of Chris Guthrie so effectively, that i felt immersed in her words and every thought.  I cannot believe that a man of the 1930s was able to capture what it means to be a young woman so well, when modern men struggle to this day!

This book broke my heart and made me fall in love with our beautiful country and it’s history all over again.  But it also made me angry.  It made me angry for a time when certain language was acceptable to be used against POC, the disabled and travelling communities.  One word especially triggered this for me and I really struggled to get over that!

This is the history of Scotland, our Scottish roots no matter what your race, religion etc. The use of this language in a book about our history Succeeds in removing POC from the narrative when they read this.  Effectively telling them “this is our history and not yours”.  Which is so not the case.  We ALL belong to this land, we all have our history imbedded into this country.  And I don’t want anyone ever to feel like they don’t fit into that.  We’re aw Jock Tamson’s weans at the end of the day!

I honestly have never loved and been raging about a book so much in all my life.  It is so so important and yet so wrong in other ways.  And I would be doing myself and others who may pick this book up in the future a disservice if I didn’t mention it’s problems too.

Please note this is NOT a negative review.  This is someone who is confused, in love, gushing and yet raging mad about a beautiful beautiful book!

See, now you’re as confused as me! You’re welcome!
