I really tried to like this book, as it is meant to be the best Scottish novel of all time according to some publications. I get the themes, but this read a lot like Tess of the d’Urbervilles to me. Too rape-y, too incest-y, too much trauma porn. Chris is a strong woman that truly knows hardship, a concept that was successfully driven home after the first two pages, and it only went downhill from there. Maybe the reason it’s considered good is because it’s edgy, but I will never not question the integrity of men who write (or used to write) women making them suffer the worst things in the world. Even though that issue could be resolved by perhaps finding out more about the life of the author, reading these stories still makes me sick.
