3 stars - I liked it
Dexter Blake, single minded about his football career and not on the lookout for a relationship asks out the "Amazonian" Harper Nugent after hearing her step-brother insult her. After one great date, Dex and Harper begin a friends with benefits arrangement. How long can this arrangement last when genuine feelings get in the way?
Dexter and Harper are a great couple. Their time together is relaxed, friendly and hot between the sheets. The story moves along at a good pace and issues between the couple are confined to them; there is no 'other woman' or other contrived plot line. I liked both characters enough to want them to get together.
The book is set in Sydney but most places mentioned in the book are fictitious. This is probably for the best because nitpickers like me would be tsk-tsking if there were any glaring errors.
Playing It Cool is book 2 in Amy Andrew's Sydney Smoke Rugby series. This book can be read as a stand alone.

Dexter didn't date. Not because he didn't like women, but because he had to focus on his career. Along came Harper, and he was so taken by her, that he forgot his own no dating rule. I enjoyed seeing these two together. There was a ton of chemistry, and I thought they were good for one another. Harper struggled a bit with her body image due to her stepmother's nit-picking. But, Dexter loved the whole package. She did a lot of Dexter too. He always felt like he had to maintain some level of performance, but with Harper, he could just be himself.
I totally understood the root of the drama, but at some point, I wanted to smack Dex, and tell him to snap out of it. I did enjoy the grand gesture, and the epilogue made me super happy too.

Since it’s NRL Grand Final time (Raiders were robbed!) and Rugby World Cup so a good time to revisit some of Amy Andrews’ rugby novellas. This one manages to pack quite a punch for a short book. I enjoyed both the leads, but felt like the hero’s big reversal at the end happened maybe a little too quickly.
I recently reread this after getting the other books in the series on sale. I loved this book. One of my favorite tropes is: woman who knows she's worth more dumps the guy who's dragging his heels. Harper may have body image issues, but she knows her worth. She loves Dex, but she's also willing to tell him what she needs. It's great. Sexy, steamy, and wonderful.
Fake relationship, plus size heroine, sizzling smexy times? Yes please. This book was delicious. Rugby player+artist+fake relationship = of course it won't be fake for long. Go read it.
This is more like a 3.5 star book for me because the ending was so rushed. This dude said some awful shit and he needed to go into cold storage for a little while to ruminate on what a dickhead he was being. But instead he went from not wanting to be seen in public with the heroine to proposing at the very same event in front of 400 people?!? Nah. Not believable at all.
This was a fast and very enjoyable read for me. I have not read the first in this series but I intend to rectify that.
Dex and Harper are a great couple. After her stepbrother insults curvy Harper Dex steps in to ask her out. Although their intention is to rile her stepbrother and keep it platonic, Harper and Dex soon are heavily involved.
I liked the fact that both Dex and Harper are so real. Dex is totally committed to rugby and is certainly not the standard womanizing sports hero. Harper is a warm woman, trying to be secure in her body. Their chemistry is sizzling and natural.
Bring on the next team member!

Very competent Commitment-phobe meets Perfect-Girl story - enjoyed this. A bit primary-coloured, but hey.

This book was HOT! HOT! HOT! Literally off the charts, e-readers smoking kind of hot! The chemistry between Dexter and Harper was not only sizzling, it was also emotional, and their connection with each other was so profound that I had a hard time letting go of them, even after the book ended!
Dexter Blake is a football player, who has only recently gotten the recognition that he deserves, with just a few playing years left in him. So he has decided that anything that is a distraction isn’t permitted in his life. Until, he sees the one woman who seems to be the epitome of the kind of woman he loves getting his hands on!
Harper Nugent is a painter/artist by profession; even though her family doesn’t exactly consider it to be the best profession for her. She is also a curvy woman; not exactly the kind of woman who would be poster child for beauty really! So when she encounters Dexter, trying to play the Knight in front of her asshole Step-Brother; she assumes that he is asking her out either for laughs or as a pity date – neither of it she is actually happy about!
But when their first date, turns into two and then into three with an explosive chemistry; both of them have quite a lot to actually ponder upon!
This was honestly quite a beautiful read, really! I adored the connection between Dex and Harper; their reluctance to actually fall for each other, but their emotions are honestly the best part of this book. It is so heart-warming to see their connection, their inability to fight the pull they both have with each other and their character growth!
Do they both make mistakes? Yes, they do. But then again, they are both human(ish) and it is obviously to be expected, for how will they ever learn! And honestly, I enjoyed every bit of the journey they both had to get to their HEA!
My only issue was that I did wish they had a little bit more communication at the end – for the ending somehow seemed abrupt when it came, for me at least!
First book by Amy Andrews and I am a FAN FOR LIFE – so now I am gonna go stalk all her other books ;)
