The characters are interesting, the themes are good. Occasionally explainy or clunky but overall good. Tourraine's struggle to find her place after being displaced from her homeland, the way she is not fully a part of either, and how she keeps fucking up trying to work with either were well done and really hit. Also just fun fucked up romance subplot. Good mommy issues subplot. A lot of the character arcs and work blended really well with the overall plot. How Luca wanted to be "a good ruler" but for so long couldn't see how that conflicted with being a colonialist ruler. The big flaw of this is the default no gender or sexuality power dynamics, because it smooths out the race and colonialism ones, making things less complicated. But regardless still well done especially compared to other stuff I read *cough * Baru Cormorant *cough *What more can I say other than sign me up for the sequel, although I think this would work fine as a stand alone

Amazing characters, an intricate plot, deception, betrayal, and so much more. This book was utterly amazing and I can't wait to read book 2!

Book has such slow passing that it moves at a snails pace. It is hard to focus on the plot because I keep losing interest. This is my second attempt to read this book and it was an epic failure. Only reason I tried again was because I bought the a signed first edition of the sequel. This is one book that it just isn’t worth bothering with.

I went into this booking thinking it was going to be more fantasy and less political drama and I was wrong. I liked the tension between the two main characters, Luca and Touraine, and I think the duel points of views worked well for the book.

I loved the world building, I could clearly see the coutry of Balladaire in my mind's eye. This is definitely a fantasy because
there's magic in the world
but I think the book was too heavy on politics for me have to rated it four stars or higher.

I read this for my book club,  The Supernova Book club
