The Reading List explores themes of human connection, mental illness, bibliophilia, and the importance of libraries.

I got this book from a thrift store a while ago. I rarely buy books I've never heard of before, but this sounded interesting so I decided to pick it up. I'm really glad I did, because I liked it a lot! It didn't hook me in right away, I'm glad I kept on reading because it eventually picked up and I was entertained all the way through to the end!

I loved the premise and the characters. This makes me want to write a reading list of my own, and also to spend more time at the library.

If you like A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman and Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, you will probably like this, it has similar vibes.

It wasn't what I thought it was. I thought it would be a young girl and an older man having a friendship. I just found it kind of boring and depressing and decided I'd rather spend my time listening to something else.

From the very beginning of reading this book I immediately fell in love with the characters and the writing. Not one second of this journey I was bored or felt the need to pick up another book to get my energy up again.
It's a mix of lighthearted and emotional as we see the two main characters interact in a way that aids each other's coping process, in comparison to the heaviness of their personal lives when it's time to face it at the end of the day.
I'm a sucker for reading about wholesome friendships but what really got me was how this entire reading adventure created the most beautiful bonds between family (blood and found) which pulled on my heart at so many points.
The ending and third act conflict was beautifully done in my opinion with the very real rawness which left me with quotes that are ingrained into my mind and very much still weighs down my heart.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a read that subtly grips you into every aspect of it without having to be over the top.

This is such a heartwrenchingly sweet story of growth and friendship but simultaneously so heartbreakingly sad in a lively and unexpected way <3

it was alright. the curve ball third act tragedy was disappointing but i appreciated the reveal at the very end (don't know how i didn't guess it). i just wasn't that into it. i think this book would be best for someone in a similar situation to any of the book's characters who find the titular reading list—lonely, grieving, isolated, etc. reading the eight/nine books on the reading list along with the characters might feel like kind of a static book club, with some interpretation of the books plus insight into how these books' characters, plots, and themes affect the lives of The Reading List's characters.
i listened to the audiobook and read the ebook, and it seems the ebook went through more rounds of editing than the audiobook script did, unfortunately.
cover design review: ★★★★☆. the colors, illustration, and title are all very nice. i like the typeface for the author's name and "A Novel", but i don't like that this subtext is black while the title and tagline are white, i think it detracts from the legibility. and of course i hate the tagline and that it even has a tagline, what is this
