I wanted to love this book, I really did. The story is cute and I’m a sucker for fake dating. However, I wasn’t a fan of how the only way the author destined the male characters was by the color of their skin. “He was a white man in khakis” “a black boy stood behind him”. It felt off and it gave me the ick. The story was cute! The main character pissed me off a few times, but that’s what teenage girls do so that was perfect!

Fun to read. Fun high school characters and nerdiness.

Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Children’s for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Romance and nerdy stuff are two of my favorite things so I got really excited when I saw this book. I loved all the mentions of nerdy stuff and getting to see the characters play Dungeons and Dragons.

Riley is a musical and theater nerd who ends up getting grounded and her punishment is to work at her dad’s game store (this sounds like a dream instead of a punishment to me). She’s dreading working there because she has no interest in games. Her classmate Nathan also works there and isn’t looking forward to have her there. They end up fake dating so he can catch the eye of the girl he’s been crushing on and to prove to Riley’s ex boyfriend that she’s moved on. We all know how this will explode in their faces.

I could not put this book down, I had an amazing time with it! This is a sweet lovestory revolving around fake dating. It also addresses strained familial relationships, facing one's prejudices, and making new friends while juggling multiple responsibilities. The enthusiasm about one's hobbies is tangible, and you can relate to the excitement of finding new interests and the joy of having people to share them with.
