Incredibly amazing when amazing. Incredibly slow when slow. I'd recommend the abridged version.

Enorme e immenso, ma posso scusare lo stile fino a un certo punto.
Bellissime le prime pagine e le ultime, il sorgere e tramontare della figura di Valejan. Javert e Gravoche altri due personaggi fantastici.

This man has a way with words, but his storytelling is so over sentimental the result becomes unbelievable. He is bombastic and pretentious. His verbose detailed expositions about several historical subjects are mostly uninteresting and feel like pedantic show offs resulting in an ultra-large book (>1300 pages). He is pro Napoleon, pro Church and very chauvinistic (nationalistic) pro France. This makes the book, when the main story is not involved, hardly readable and outdated. The story is mostly plot-driven, IE based on one coincidence after another. 6/10
the story is quite plot heavy and within a few hundreds pages you're introduced to characters who feel as if they've been with you for years. this edition read like it was always intended for the theatres and the poignant, subtle writing of political context alongside the exploration human conditions felt moving.

i can’t be objective about this – les miserables has been important to me for a long time.
sure, it’s really long. sure, there are a million totally unrelated tangents. sure, there are outdated ideas on gender and marriage. but frankly i don’t think its length or flaws should deter you. just take your time! it took me two years, after all.
the plot and characters are iconic for good reason. its political commentary remains all too relevant and it delves into human nature in a way only a 1000+ page book can do.
it’s also way easier to read than you’d expect. it’s exciting and even most of hugo’s tangents have a lot of worth. i really enjoyed reading his thoughts on politics and the world at the time, and i’m sad that the bright future he envisioned for our world has not yet come to pass.

…in other words, and in still wider terms, while ignorance and poverty persist on earth, books such as this cannot fail to be of value.
