it was cool, but definitely not what I expected. I wanted something more light hearted maybe, or the relationship to stand out more. but it's a lesbian book, and it deals with gender expression so I'm okay with it, I'd totally recommend it.

Whew okay!!!! I’m glad it ended the way it did, and it was a satisfying conclusion, but this book was REALLY hard for me to read because of how MUCH toxic masculinity there is.
I’m SO here for the lovely friendships that develop over the course of the book, and the exploration of really tough family dynamics, but there was so so so much true grossness from a couple specific male characters that it was hard for me to enjoy reading it, if that makes sense.

Really liked it! I admired Pen for being so self assured and her parents and Colby made me want to throw things at the wall so hard!

This is good. If you're into queer YA, read it. It's not exactly to my taste because the teenagers are TOO REAL. And god, teenagers are so annoying. But yeah. It's good. Give it to any teens you know.

It was great. Not my type of book but amazing plot and characters. I love the ideas in the story and it is very modern and inclusive. Such a good book in 2021!

With its eye catching cover and very of the moment gender questioning theme, Morris-nominated Girl Mans Up will deservedly attract readers. I found the plot a little meandering, and some of it didn't quite ring true, but Pen is a terrifically authentic character that many will gratefully relate to. See my full review here.
