The short stories towards the end were my favorites, but overall this collection was just okay.

I enjoyed this short story collection- the characters were all believable and the themes weren’t overly predictable. Not usually a short story collection person but these were fun to read and a few had some thoughts or turns or phrases to chew on. Didn’t rock my world and some of the characters felt a bit canned to me (but tbh could have just been the early 2000 setting).

I loved The Office of Historical Corrections last year, so I made it a priority to read Danielle Evans’ first collection of short stories this year. This is another excellent, heart wrenching collection, though you can see her growth as a writer from this collection to the next.

While every single story in The Office of Historical Corrections was striking and affecting, this collection wasn’t quite as pristine. Some of the stories, while good, weren’t as memorable as her more recent works are. However, there are some true gems in this collection.

Standouts for me (that I still think about days after reading): Snakes and The King of a Vast Empire.
