A lot of more depth into the world, and another pair of wicked twists near the end. One more book to go!

Action filled book that keeps you hooked... Need to find the next book. (Hopefully it will have a good ending)

I liked the pace of this second book compared to the first. This does feel like it could be one giant book instead of three but the last line of this book?? I gasped outloud and immediately bought the last book. I need to know what happens.

2.5 stars.
I started reading this to my 13-year old in mid-January 2015, after reading the first title aloud to him. We took a break on January 25, 2015, in order to read [b:Golden Son|18966819|Golden Son (Red Rising, #2)|Pierce Brown|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1394684475s/18966819.jpg|26984955] for his book club. When we finished that title and it was time to return to this one, my son wasn't interested. Since we got 41% through, I figured I would read a bit more on my own.
I resumed reading, solo, on March 6, 2015. After I hit 50%, I decided to begin skimming. My son didn't miss this book at all during our hiatus, and neither did I. Me not thinking about The Rule of Thoughts, or missing it, or anything of the sort is not a good sign; I should have missed the characters and been desirous to know what happens to them.
Now I'm 64% done, and I still don't care so much. I will at least skim to the end.
EDIT: Done now. The book ended on a more enthralling note than many of the other parts, and properly set up what the major crisis in the final book of the trilogy will be. Mostly I preferred the action of the first title, the exploring of this new gaming world and the main characters. The Rule of Thoughts dialed back the action, didn't spend enough time in the "Sleep" to keep me entertained, and I grew distant from the characters.
Glad I finished it on my own, but I'm not compelled to read the third title in the series.

James Dashner has done it again. Created a perfect story in a not so perfect world. In the sequel, the stakes are higher. I'm sure everyone has a boat ton of questions after that last ending, but after this novel, the readers will receive more questions than answers. The characters become even more developed and we have plot twists around every corner. This is one of the best science fiction novels I have ever read, and I assure you, it does not suffer from second book syndrome.
