This is not a book I think I would have typically read the synopsis of and picked up. In fact, I hadn’t even seen/heard of it before it was sent as part of a library book box I am subscribed to, which led to this awesome discovery! This story gives you lots to think about the whole time you read as well as once you’ve reached the end. I keep thinking of new points and revelations the more I think on it and how it could relate to the world around me— which is quite a lot! This is definitely a more literary style writing with lots of social commentary, and with a very fresh take! I also find that the way it is done can be applied to a lot of situations instead of a narrow reading applying to only one label- I mean, that’s kinda what the whole book seems to be about. Labels. What it would be like to choose to live without those labels, how people view someone who does such a thing, how they view themselves, how our views of ourselves and each other effect each respectively. How do we make sense of self? A very deep question that is tackled in this story in a very open way. What you may take from this book and what I may take may very well be different things. But I do think if you look for something to learn from it, you will find that, at the least.
I was wondering when I was going into this whether it was building towards a more horror style tale as I had seen it previously tagged with horror. So, without giving away spoilers, I do just want to say that this is not horror. It’s literary, contemporary fiction with social commentary. It is, however, eerie. Eerie in the way that life can also be so, particularly when some people would hold on almost fanatically to what they believe, to tradition and the idea of what is right because if they loose it, what are they left with?
I highly recommend this book! It does feel slower paced, but that’s mainly because it is more about the slow revelation of character and character creation than some
action-packed climax or mystery to be solved. Yet it does look into some deeper level mysteries that connect us as humans, I believe.

A curious little book that I'm not quite sure I fully understood but I still think I enjoyed?
One day, in a southern American town, a person is found sleeping on a church pew. They are seemingly genderless, racially ambiguous, and no one is sure of their age. One of the members of the church decides to take them in, and from there everyone in the community becomes involved. They are named Pew, given where they were found, but despite how hard the community presses them for answers, they do not give them. We are not even sure if they know the answers to begin with.
I'm not totally sure what to make of this book. I was able to pick up on some commentary on white saviorism as well as critiques of organized religion. I think this book also spoke a lot about how people react when they are faced with something they cannot easily categorize, something that doesn't fit into their preconceived notions of how the world works. While I enjoyed these themes, I felt very distant from the character of Pew and wasn't really sure what to make of their thoughts and experiences. I think perhaps I like the idea of this book more than the book itself. Regardless, I do think it is a good book, I just wish I understood it a bit more.
