This is a book for people who have already decided what side they wanted to be on, and I was disappointed in that.

In college, my ultra-conservative Ad/Pr prof gave us No Logo to read, which he said he hated the message but the thoroughness and thoughtfulness with which the argument was presented was impossible to deny. My father, who responds whenever I present anything that is disagreeable to his Rush Limbaugh informed view, with "Capitalism works," I could have handed that book to.

Not this one. Not to discredit any of the opinions or what she is saying, it's all very interesting, it's just from a place that assumes the audience is already on her side.

This is like Naomi Klein: the Greatest Hits, pulling together the ideas she has used in her previous work to help explain the contextual forces that gave rise to Trump. Fuller thoughts to come.

4.25 rounded down. Decent audiobook narrator.

Added more context to the last few elections, the psychology behind key players including Obama and Trump, and how shock doctrine politics got us where we are today in the American political sphere.

An important book about not just saying no to shock doctrine-induced disaster capitalism, but creating an alternative to say yes to - making the leap to an equitable and sustainable world. Naomi Klein always talks so much sense in a confusing world and her works make me want to do better. Only downside to this particular book of hers is it doesn't contain sources. That makes it difficult to convince skeptics of the powerful ideas contained within.

Three stars for me means I liked it but didn’t love it. It’s not that there was anything wrong with the book, but this quote summed up the book so the book just didn’t have the depth I was hoping for.

“The really critical thing isn’t who’s sitting in the White House, but who is sitting in, in the cafeterias, in the streets, in the halls of government and the factories. Who is protesting, who is occupying offices and demonstrating. Those are the things that determine what happens.” —Howard Zinn

Good quote tho.

This book focused more on the history of our presidents and how our country got to be where it’s at. I learned a ton and it was super important but I didn’t feel like Trump was always the focus, which is ok but made it a bit slower to get through. Had actionable items and was inspiring on how people can work together to elicit change.

Possible the most important book of 2017. Shows how we got here and what we can do next.
