This book really surprised me, in a good way. It was emotional and at times dark, but beautiful in the way the story was crafted and how aspects of Franny’s personality and life were revealed through flashbacks and subtle hints. I really enjoyed the experience of reading and following the story!

The only things keeping me from giving this a smooth 2 stars are the beauty of the language in this book and the overall concept. I initially thought the mass extinction plot line wasn’t focused enough for me, but I did appreciate the underlying nature of it - species are dying at a rate where the people in this book can’t think about it all the time. Aside from the pretty language and the dystopian backdrop this book was simply not for me. The narrator is insufferable in a way that I can’t put my finger on. I think it’s the “life is so hard but I’m sooo flighty hehe” nature of it all. Also I could see the “twist” at the end coming from 700 miles away. Not a bad book, but definitely not worth the hype I personally saw about it.

I didn’t like the way it ended (though it was appropriate for the genre). I would’ve liked to hear more about Ennis and the other friends she made on the fishing boat.

I found this compelling: I narrative sit in the near future, where many species have gone extinct, and the main character is trying to follow the migration of terns from Greenland to Antarctica. She makes her way onto a fishing ship filled with diverse and complicated characters, and many conflicts and wounds emerge.

A hard read because of the possibility of such a harsh future becoming a reality. But beautifully written and somehow hopeful despite its grimness.

I really, really hated this book. It was a gradual but very steady decline from being into it at the start, and just hating it more and more through the entire thing, right up until the end. I did not like the main character (or many of the other characters, for that matter). I hated the really creepy AF main romantic relationship. I hated how many things the author got wildly wrong about wildlife research and conservation (like things that were pretty egregious and would have been super simple to just google). I hated the whole storyline. I hated how predictable some of the things were, that the author tried to keep mysterious throughout the book and reveal later.

I do get why some people might like this book. They're just wrong. (Sorry, but did I mention I really really hate it?)

I read Once There Were Wolves last year and really enjoyed it so I was very excited to read McConaghy's debut novel. In the beginning I did not think that I would be so invested in the last migration of the Arctic Terns but oh well I was! The writing style was so eerie and atmospheric having me turn page after page. The topics of climate change and animal extinction were so real and scary. I was invested in all timelines and I loved to find out everything about the main character Franny. Seeing her in the present and in past events that made her the woman she is now. This story was dark and cruel, yet also beautiful and breathtaking. Be sure to check trigger warnings since some events were very heavy. I loved this book a lot and it has a special place in my heart. If it sounds like something you would enjoy I encourage you to give this one a go.
