Oh my God. I absolutely flippin’ LOVED this book! It’s honestly one of the best ones from this month (so far). I rarely read middle grade, but this one takes the cake. I freaking love Sophie. She kind of reminded me of Year 1 Harry Potter. And I think that’s why I enjoyed this book so much. The whole school system and the magic system reminded me of the series I hold most dear. I LOVE GRADY AND EDALINE!!! They deserve everything. The part about them canceling the adoption made me rather upset, but they redeemed themselves. DELLA AND ALDEN OMG!! I love them both. Chefs Kiss. Don’t even get me started on Fitz Vacker. I love him so much. DEX TOO! I honestly loved all of the characters. They had so much depth to them, and I think that’s what made me enjoy this that much more. Fitz and Keefe and swoon worthy. I won’t even deny this. But yes. I loved this book and everything about it. 4.5/5 stars, and I highly recommend it!

My kids (ages 7 & 9) would probably give it a 5. The world building and secondary characters are too thin to stand up well to grown up scrutiny, but the pace and plotting are decent, and they were in it for the suspense and the gradual reveal. (Okay, I confess, I almost snuck into their room and did a few chapters ahead of our read aloud because I got hooked too.)
We got this on the recommendation of the 7yo's friend's older sister. After a chapter or two I didn't think we'd keep going because I found it kind of mediocre and thought the boys would be turned off by the focus on Sophie's awkward crush on Fitz -it reads more 6th grade than 2nd grade. Plus they usually really go in for comedy, which is pretty sparse here. But they were all in, and the 9yo has proceeded to tear through the rest of the series, so that shows what I know.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why this book isn't more popular, and why I'm not hearing about it all over the place. I mean, obviously I heard about it at one point, or I wouldn't have added it to my tbr list, but I think it should definitely be more well known. It's really good.

I have read a few reviews that call it a copy of Harry Potter. While I honestly think it's just about as good as Harry Potter, I wouldn't call it a copy at all. Yes, there are some similarities. But that's true of just about all books nowadays. There really is nothing new under the sun. There are bound to be similar elements in books, especially if you read a lot, and more especially if you're looking for them.

I think this book stands on its own, and is a fantastic addition to its genre. The setting was really fun and memorable. I loved the main character, and there were a lot of side characters to like as well. The plot moves at a great pace, and was never slow or boring. I would definitely recommend this book.
