This is very much a young adult story, centered around the main characters mental and family issues, and much less a science fiction story, so if you want the latter, I suggest you skip this one. There is a science fiction story, but it is really only a shallow backdrop for the main character going through regular teenage issues including having a weird family, topped with a good array of anxiety issues, depression, and narcissism. The science fiction part of the story was very shallow and didn't progress very much following the first chapter. So if you've read the blurb on back of the book, then yes, you got 95% of the science fiction plot already. I found the main character very unlikeable because of her constant complaining and narcissistic behavior, and how she multiple times said one thing and did the opposite, and kept complaining about everybody else's behavior when often she was the one doing the shitty or completely illogical actions (Despite multiple times stating that she liked facts and logical thinking - Oh no you don't!).
Despite the above, I found the story quite well written, so if you are into young adult teenage issues stories, then this is for you. If you want deep science fiction, then this is definitely not for you.

I LOVED IT!!! The world ending from an anxious teenage girls point of view was amazing and I couldn't stop reading until I finished. I prayed that it would end with such a twist the way it did and I'm so lucky there is a second story! You bet I'm going to get that second book ASAP! I highly recommend!!

Everything about this synopsis intrigued me. Every expectation was met.
This story gave me exactly everything I would think to consider if I were in this situation.
Trust if portals appeared today (February 2025) I would be first in line off this planet. They would have got me, I’m taking the bait! Take me to your leader. Whatever. I hate it here! Bye! Take me! Can I bring the dog?
Now lemme get to the second book and I’ll let you know if i regret that decision.

An interestng commentary on what people would do when faced with the end of life, as they know ît. Would we follow the unknown, with a promise of survival, without question or would we stick it out. How would our friends and families influence our choices. Sometimes even every day decisions can plague us with the same questions. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

As someone who doesn't read Science Fiction or Dystopian novels that often, this was a random selection, but an enjoyable one.
The moment I began reading, I was sucked into this world and scenario that was created. I connected with the characters, and I was invested in the plot.
I can't wait to read the second book.

Alexandra is stuck between living in the moment and what comes next. She’s barely coping and only with the help of her Ativan. That is until her train stops unexpectedly on the way home from a concert with her boyfriend. When a mysterious doorway emerges next to the track, what appears to be a human from the future shares a sinister warning – the world is ending. The holograms claim to offer safety to anyone willing to walk through them. With time counting down, will Alex go through?
I have a love-hate relationship with this book. I loved that the main character has anxiety, but I felt for a YA book this one was over the top. I’m not saying we need to sugar coat things but on the first page the MC is talking about dismembering a baby. That’s a bit much for me. If you get past the first page and keep reading, you will get some reprieve from the vividness of the attacks, but they are still present. I did enjoy the concept of this book, and dystopian is one of my favorite sci-fi subgenres. I was very happy that the copy I received included an excerpt into the next book of this duology because it ended on a big cliffhanger. Reading the next little bit of the second book made it end on a pleasant note for me.
This book is out June 6th though it was previously published under the title Consider. The second book in this duology is due out later this year.
Thank you so much to Sourcebooks Fire, @sourcebooksfire, and Netgalley, @Netgalley, for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
