Am I being gaslit into thinking this is a “love story”??

I LOVED Hotel Nantucket with my whole heart and I had high expectations for this one but wtf? The relationships in this book were GROSS and Elin tried to write Theo’s POV as a man scorned by true love but he was GROOMED by a child predator. It was not love, it was a lonely old lady taking advantage of a kid in high school and he became obsessed with her because she kept him at arms length and introduced him to “manhood”. No warm, fuzzy feelings towards these characters at all. The friendships sucked, Kayla was insecure and weak and the ending was annoying. There’s no way Antoinette deserved any forgiveness.

I can’t deal with the idea of this woman’s 30 something year old friend having sex with her 18 year old son. Skeev factor 1,000,000. :(

"You will not be able to put it down...read in one day! " The ties between women can run as deep as the ocean--but so can their secrets. For 20 years, Kayla, Antoinette and Val have performed their own special summer ritual. Once a year, the old friends put aside their daily, separate lives to drink champagne, swap stories and swim naked under the Nantucket stars. But on one of those bonding nights, one of their trio swims out from the shore and doesn't return. After the surviving friends emerge from their grief, they realize that the repercussions of their loss go far beyond their little circle, and they begin to uncover layers of secrets--and their connections to each other--that were never revealed on the beach. What has made their friendship strong now has the power to destroy--their marriages, families, even themselves.

This book was so good and then I got to the end and it was like "let's forget about all the crap that happened making life miserable and we'll just move on." It felt like a cop out or at least rushed. The POV in this book was kind of odd too. For the longest time, the reader was in Kayla's POV and then halfway through it switches to Theo, then at the very end it switches to Raoul. If POV is going to switch characters, I much prefer it to be consistent throughout the book. I suppose it needed to be that way, except for Raoul because his POV was kind of pointless to me. The Theo flashback was much too long though, and the narrator for the audiobook made him sound like he was whining the whole time. Maybe he was whining and I would have read it that way had I read the book, but the narrator was awful for his part. Overall, it was really captivating, but the ending made me feel like I wasted my time.

Classic Elin Hilderbrand - set in Nantucket in the summer, three women come together as is their tradition for the last 20 years. Kayla, Antoinette, and Val have been friends forever and each summer they come together for a weekend to drink champagne, catch up, and skinny dip in the ocean. When Val disappears one night after swimming, the cracks and fissures in their friendships are revealed. Secrets and lies threaten to ruin friendships, marriages, and families. I really wanted to like this one, and it was enjoyable, but not my favorite Hilderbrand book. I didn't love or connect with the characters in the same way I do with some of her other novels. I enjoyed this book, but it won't stick with me.
