The books require a lot of suspension of disbelief, sure, but it’s all great fun. I enjoyed tucking in to read the book because there’s so much hope and grit in the characters. I adore Annabeth in particular - as a middle schooler, I would’ve wanted to be her.
This is a reread, so I already knew I would like it. It messes with me a little because I was introduced to the movie first and while I know fans don’t like the movie… it’s my first introduction and I always compare everything to it. I found myself surprised by all the stops along the journey, because I didn’t remember them (they weren’t in the movie). There’s so much lore - even the references are delightful.
I enjoyed my reread and already know I’ll read it again someday.
Moderate: Animal cruelty and Animal death
Minor: Child death, Death, Domestic abuse, and War
Several characters in this book have diagnoses of (or belief of having) ADHD and dyslexia. This is explained away by their demigod status.cinhein's review against another edition

Since it had been so long I'd also forgotten a lot of the plot points in here, like the gang's side-quest to get Ares' shield and the waterbed emporium. I also loved the subtle foreshadowing and the way Rick writes Percy's character. The only thing I would personally change is the slight fatphobia towards Clarisse, she is the only character who is described as fat and she is frequently called ugly. But other than that, this is an excellent book that I recommend to anyone looking for some serotonin.
Moderate: Physical abuse, Abandonment, Child abuse, Car accident, War, Violence, and Bullying
Minor: Body shaming, Fatphobia, and Child death

This book follows Percy Jackson. He is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at a boarding school is only getting worse – Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he has to go to a place where he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father, he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends – one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena – Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.
So, I went into this book with little to no knowledge of this series. I know there is a new TV show coming out and I know there was a film out, I haven’t watched the film as I usually struggle to get into Greek Mythology books. For a young adult book, this book was a super easy read, and the explanation didn’t feel like you were stupid, and I didn’t even have to google anything. The storyline was action-packed but also managed to give you a feel of the characters and the world we’ve just been introduced to. I love the found family element in this book and I love the trio. Yes, I can see the elements to Harry Potter with the trio, but I liked the difference between them.
I loved this book, and I will carry on with this series even if I am 30 when I finish this series.
