Had to read for a class on doubles, very dark but beautifully written with an engaging story
Graphic: Gore, Gun violence, Rape, Torture, Murder, War
fast-paced
It was really, really well written.
I enjoyed the majority of it, and it was really heartbreaking when he reminisced on his childhood during his break.
The reasons I deducted stars is:
1) the entire ending about theprincess and the sorcerer ??? . I was completely lost and felt as though my entire face morphed into a question mark because literally what??????
2) I think one part of it is that I listened to it on audiobook and I got a bit distracted at that point, so I wasn’t paying 100% attention.
3) Either way, the ending felt a bit…underwhelming? Maybe that’s not the right word?
4) The metaphors just kept racking up to the point where I wasn’t sure what was happening in the book.
5) For such a short book, it was highly repetitive
6) Why did we need to know about his sex? About rape? What was the purpose

This is maybe like a 2.5. I was enjoying the first part pretty well, saved a number of quotes. But then the repetition started to bug me, the tone took a turn with the flashbacks, Fary was a big eye roll, and then we end with rape and murder (as far as I can tell) because *shock factor*. I think you can tell a story with those things in it, of course, I’m just over women and rape being used casually like this, or solely to develop a man’s story. It’s irresponsible at this point - to me.

This was a heavily metaphoric book, which in one way provides a powerful commentary on war, but on the other hand the metaphors got lost and I felt confused about what was metaphoric and what was merely an event.
The writing and description are excellently done, but become repetitive after a while. I enjoyed the start of the book when we were given a look into the characters madness as he begins to over think everything.
Also did not enjoy the oddly portrayed sex scenes, I felt uncomfortable reading them.
