dark emotional tense fast-paced

brutal, but brilliant.

“As soon as the fighting ends, we’re to file away our rage, our pain, and our fury. Pain is tolerated, we can bring our pain home on the condition that we keep it to ourselves. But rage and fury cannot be brought back to the trench. Before returning home, we must denude ourselves of rage and fury, we must strip ourselves of it, and if we don’t we are no longer playing the game of war” (p. 47).

Heartbreaking and interesting, I am sure that I'm missing some of the nuances that made this book an award winner.

Really really well written. It felt almost like the narrator was telling an oral history in style, which was really effective. Some of the imagery was weird and repetitive, but it was a very impactful overall reading experience.

This book was very good until it got to a point (about halfway) where every single sentence started with either "God's truth" or "I knew, I understood." Omg. It drove me crazy!
