Annorlunda, makaber bok om en afrikansk soldat som krigar för Frankrike under Första Världskriget.
Dyster, med repeterande språk, och hemska beskrivningar om vad som sker med mänskligheten under krigstid. Kunde fått bättre betyg om författaren inte hela tiden använde sig av grova sexuella metaforer för det kvinnliga könet i sina beskrivningar om skyttegravar och rykten (särade ben och rumpan i vädret, lös kvinna, fallen kvinna, ooorka!)

At Night All Blood Is Black by David Diop is a novella about how once the savagery of war is unleashed…it is very hard to contain once more…

Alfa Ndiaye has gone off the war very far from his home to fight for the French against the Germans. While he speaks neither language, he understands human behavior and embraces the “savage warrior” that he and his fellow countrymen are expected to portray against their enemies…

However, unlike others, Alfa does not pretend…as he ventures into the enemy trenches to claim hands and lives…as his fellow soldiers first applaud and then come to fear him…

He is not like other men as he embraces his lion totem…

Still, some element of his humanity remains as he recalls his family…his love back home…and his more-than-brother who died on the fields of war…

It remains to be seen if he will ever return to his humanity…
