Interesting magic premise though I'd hope for more description in the next book. Wasn't much of a surprise that the soul magic was tainted, considering that it's getting used to execute people in a rather twisted way. I enjoyed the adventure overall and the reveal of how much the king had been lying about wasn't a surprise but it was still handled well.
I liked the mermaid and pirate especially.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot was fresh and exciting. The reason I didn't go with 5 stars was because I personally felt like some things could have been explained more thoroughly, I struggled to figure out where everyone was positioned during the fight scenes and some of the worldbuilding was so obvious to our MC's POV that they weren't always expanded on.
The world is a really cool concept, I liked most of the magic system, I liked the main character because she didn't feel like a generic stand-in; she was opinionated and skilled appropriately for the journey, and self-aware.
The ending felt jumbled for me, we had been away from the starting point for so long that I couldn't remember any of the opening characters' names or roles.

Amora is a terribly unlikable character. I couldn’t stand her with all her “rightful heir” monologues. Also, her unreasonable dislike for Ferrick while falling head over heels for Bastian immediately was such an eyerollllll. It’s giving Kocoum vs John Smith. (Team Kocoum all the way). Additionally, the first 50 pages of this book were basically only describing ridiculous dresses and uniforms. Soooo boring.

Absolutely loved this and everything within it. I hope there is more lore and adventure in the second one.

I absolutely loved this book. The story line was amazing and well thought out. I loved Amoras character as she was brave and fierce. Bastain was a character I loved immediately. His personality was great. However, there were lots of different types of magics and islands that it was hard to remember which was which. I 100% recommend this book and I can’t wait to read the next one!
