DnF at 30%. I just couldn't connect with the characters or get into the story. Hopefully others will enjoy this more.

I enjoyed this enough to read the second book, maybe. It had plenty of magical elements (mermaids, curses, powers, pirates, but the magic itself was rather confusing. I still didn’t quite understand it by the ending. It was rather violent in parts. The language wasn’t bad. I’m curious now that so much was introduced if the second book will expound on things more.

lifechanging. If I could sell my soul to reread this book for the first time again, I would.
this whole magic system is so unlike anything I have ever read. there are multiple islands, and each island represents a different type of magic. to be more specific, each island holds people who yield one specific magic and only practice that magic. it was so cool. but as the story unravels, things aren't as they seem and the view that Amora has of the world is shattered. there are a lot of things that were kept from her growing up and we follow her on this crazy adventure at sea with a pirate, mermaid, and Ferrick (notice how I don't have a label for him like "pirate" or "mermaid" LMAO. Ferrick is just Ferrick... and he's amazing.) who I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. he was definitely my favorite character because no matter what happened he was ALWAYS there for amora. I actually want to be this man's best friend... and then marry him. because he's that great. anyway, another thing I loved was that in every chapter something new and wild happened. If it weren't for school, I would've read this in 2 days because of how gripping this plot is. It's really hard to stop reading once you get into it and understand the world. and the ending really, really got to me. watching amora go from this brave, fierce, and excited girl who just wants to experience all life has to give her to this more scarred version of herself was so insane... like I said, I WOULD SELL MY SOUL TO REREAD THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME.

I hardly finished this book.

I was intrigued by the description, and it started off strong, but my main issue with this book is that the plot moved along faster than the character development so I didn't care what was happening at all. Plot without character connection means nothing to me. I will not be reading the next book.

The story was good but the audiobook narrator was not my favorite.
