Idk but something about this just didn’t wow me like I thought it would! I kept waiting for something like a big twist to happen or for something to shock me but it never did! I think I was also probably a little caught up in how the two main characters are women of color but it didn’t feel essential to the story because it only comes up in very few, select moments and (in my opinion) in kinda weird ways. Maybe I’m just sensitive 🤷🏽‍♀️ It was a beautifully written story that really got me into the award season mood though!

The book starts off slow, but it picks up later. I loved the way Evelyn Hugo is portrayed in the book.

Reasons I Enjoyed the Book:
  • Evelyn Hugo feels so human
  • It discusses a lot of topics in one character’s life, which I liked because a person’s story is made up of the intersection of all of their identities (namely career, gender, sexuality, familial role)

I would read this again for a predictable telling of a person’s own humanity.

I love stories about women who kinda suck, and the disproportionate ways people will think of these women. Monique's portion of the novel was hard for me to get through, something about how it was written made it difficult to connect, but once Evelyn takes over the narrative, the story flows much smoothly.
With all that being said, there is a bit of unexamined fatphobia exhibited in the book that did hinder my enjoyment. It's brief but glaring to my eyes.
Otherwise this was a deeply moving story featuring plenty of old hollywood scandal and how marginalized people survive and thrive.

This book was interesting. It was written from the POV of Monique, a journalist, who is writing a biogorphy about Evelyn Hugo, an actress who had seven husbands. The book went between the current time and Evelyn's history. Throughout the time they spend together, Evelyn keeps saying that she is not a good person and that everyone, especially Monique, is going to hate her in the end. There is this feeling throughout the book that something big is going to happen, and only Evelyn knows that that is. In the end, it was a plot twist that I saw coming (and I didn't really like). Overall, it was a good book.
